Although most of the remnants of these ancestors were destroyed by pre-modern medieval man, the Spaniard Conqueror, Quito still has the evidence of its past. Its ancient history springs out beneath the concrete and modern asphalt. The history merges in the colonial architecture and art: the Escuela Quiteña is the evidence of the syncretism between the ancestral Inca and Quitu culture with European Christian culture.
Today, the ancient and ancestral history of Quito still is hidden, evidenced in small practices and everyday customs, in mixtures of Catholic Christian practices with beliefs that refer to the sun, moon and nature. So it is how Quito is conformed and the Ecuadorian identity too: miscegenation which is not defined yet, contradiction of the differences, identity that try to rescue their lost ancestors, but that at the same time is following the foreign model of well-being.
This contradiction is reflected in the great human contrast that can be perceived in the streets of Quito: executives, students, and indigenous people in traditional dress, street vendors, housewives, beggars, tourists, refugees, shoe shine boys, province upbringing people, and merchants, among others. This contrast is typical of most Latin American cities.
Quito is not only a temporary basis to go to Galapagos, the Amazon, the beaches or the Avenue of the volcanoes in the Andes. Quito, has been for more than 5,000 years the center of a variable and little-known world, cultural, social, economic, political and spiritual center of all this Andean region; sacred land to many people.
Thus, Quito has survive to many historical and daily battles: social and tectonic earthquake survivor, Quito rises at the foot of the Pichincha volcano, in the middle of the Andes, sheltered by the equatorial sky from blue to gray, and gray to dark, decorated by their clouds, mists and rains.
Quito people is simple in the treatment, complicated in the social psyche and daily happy, melodramatic but extraordinary if you got to know them. Vertical Sun City, diversity in culture, origin, belief and condition. If you visit Quito, walk around once, and twice, till be tired; understand and deal with the city and, you will be fascinated how the city surprise you.
